Case Studies

Ambatovy Nickel and Cobalt Mine, Madagascar is a long-life, lateritic nickel project with an annual design capacity of 60,000 tonnes of nickel and 5,600 tonnes of cobalt.

With shareholder such as Sherritt, Sumitomo, Korea Resources and SNC-Lavalin invested in this project, Ambatovy falls close to being ones of the largest lateritic nickel mines in the world.

Capital Steel was successful in its bid to supply over 65,000 metric tonnes of various steel product to the project which included structural steel, carbon steel piping, slurry pipeline and hot formed induction bends.

Approximately 22,000, 60cm pipes were welded together to construct the pipeline that connects the Mine to the Plant Site. The pipeline has a proven design, similar to pipelines operating elsewhere in the world, and has a capacity to transport 826 tonnes of slurried ore per hour. From the Ore Preparation Plant, the slurry is pumped into the pipeline where it begins a downhill journey to the Plant Site at 220km per hour over 30 hours.

Capital Steel successfully completed the supply of all products to the project on time and without incident.

Caltex, Australia's leading oil refiner has two production sites; one is located at Lytton Refinery in Brisbane and the other is situated at Kurnell Refinery, Sydney. The production of petrol, diesel and jet fuel for the sites combined equate to 95% of Caltex's trade and the remainder 5% consists of fuel oil, waxes and lubricants, bitumen, sulphur, LPG and other gasses. They hold 35% of Queensland's total petroleum sales and approximately 34% of all Australia's crude oil refining comes from Caltex.

Attributable to being closely located to Queensland's resource rich regions, Crude Wharf Dolphin Heads situated on Lytton Refinery is the second most profitable area for Caltex to conduct business. Crude Wharf plays a significant part for Caltex by the means of providing a vital link in the fuel chain to service Brisbane and South East Queensland.

Crude Wharf, Lytton Refinery required an upgrade to their multi-product pipeline to preserve the safe operation of the facility. This pipeline instigates from the Lytton Refinery to Eagle Farm which then connects to the joint venture pipeline that goes to the Brisbane airport.

Capital Steel was bought on board to supply all of the projects fabricated, structural steel for the berthing facilities along with the dolphin piling pipes for the upgrade. All of the materials supplied were strictly in conformance with Australian Standards AS 3678 / 3679 and 1163.

As a result of the successful upgrade and the use of Capital Steel's products for the upgrade, the Lytton Oil Refinery now produces 60% of Queensland's fuel requirements by refining 109,000 barrels of crude oil that makes 18 million litres of fuel each day of the year.

Capital Steel successfully completed the supply of all products to the project on time and without incident.

East Arm Wharf is located just 20km outside of Darwin. It was established approximately fifteen years ago to allow the export of live cattle overseas. The original contractors that built the wharf had Capital Steel to supply all of the tubular products to ensure that the project was a success.

Due to the long history Capital Steel has with the East Arm Wharf, they were requested to supply all the products for the site upgrade by McMahon Holdings, the new contracted Project Managers.

For the most recent project, Capital Steel supplied a considerable quantity of structural piling pipes and fabricated structural steel for the upgrade and extension of East Arm Wharf. All materials supplied were strictly in conformance with Australian Standards AS 3678 / 3679 and 1163

Capital Steel successfully completed the supply of all products to the Project on time and without incident.
